GeoMedia is Intergraph's premier desktop geospatial solution for accessing, displaying, analyzing, and presenting spatial data. GeoMedia provides a full suite of powerful analysis tools, including attribute and spatial query, buffer zones, spatial overlays, and thematics.

Clients need to access data - no matter where it resides, what format it takes, or how quickly it changes - and integrate it into their daily workflow to maintain an efficient operation and satisfy their customer. Providing true integration, GeoMedia enables to bring data from disparate database into a single GIS environment for viewing, analysis, and presentation. No translation of data is required. Problems with redudant and out-of-date data will be avoided because everyone is getting their information from the source. GeoMedia's data server technology supports open standards, providing direct access to all major geospatial/CAD data formats and to industry relational databases.

The traditional way of handling spatial data from different sources and in differerent vendor formats, has been to translate it from one format to another. But, this leads to data loss and the proliferation of yesterday’s data. Proprietary data formats are not a problem for GeoMedia - the universal geographic client. It accesses the data in place without any translation. GeoMedia products integrate disparate data across platforms, convert map projections into one common projection on the fly and perform analysis of these different datasets in relation to one another - no matter where the data resides, and with no translation required. Data will be always up-to-date, improving the decision-making process and reducing the cost of business.

GeoMedia supports Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle as geospatial warehouse. This means that standard relational database management tools can be used to efficiently store, access, manage and manipulate geographic information the same way that non-spatial business data are used.

GeoMedia's analysis tools make it uniquely positioned as the GIS spatial spreadsheet.
Functional attributes allow users to define attribute values as expressions, which are dynamically calculated and updated when source data changes.
Thematic mapping features can be used to create maps with color-coded and patterned attribute data, making information easier to understand.
Dynamic maps alows integration of multimedia with GIS, including hyperlinks to files that contain sounds, images or text. Satellite imagery can be integrated with other geographical information and data sets can be expanded by adding new features.
GeoMedia offers geocoding, which translates tabular data into spatial data. (For example, user could transform computer files containing customer address tables into a map of actual locations.) This takes advantage of investment in existing databases, while helping you better analyze the data.

GeoMedia provides creation of informative, easy-to-read maps and presentations with outstanding tools for map layout. The new layout window combines the power of GeoMedia’s spatial technology with a robust CAD-like drafting environment, providing unique tools for the placement of map information, as well as the typical graphics found on printed maps and charts.

With the SmartPlot tools, marginalia such as legends, scale bars and north arrows are automatically generated and dynamically linked to the map information. Any changes to the map are automatically reflected in the layout. For example, when rotating the map, the north arrow automatically updates to show the new north. When zooming in or out on the map, the scale bar automatically updates.

GeoMedia provides multiple selection methods for controlling map data that need to be plot - map window, existing area feature, rectangle, polygon, paper size, geographic frame or projected frame. Multiple map frames can be placed to present overviews and inset along with primary map. GeoMedia is OLE-compliant, so images, spreadsheets and other Windows-compatible information can be associated with map features for preparing reports, annotating drawings and creating presentations.

Creation of custom applications on the open development platform: Unlike many other desktop mapping applications, GeoMedia does not require a proprietary development language to change the user interface or develop specialized functionality. GeoMedia is compatible with standard Windows development tools. GeoMedia can be customized using OLE automation tools for fast application prototyping, such as Powersoft’s Powerbuilder, Visual Basic® and Visual C++®.

Easy to use: GeoMedia was designed to have the look and feel of Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel and Access. This presents a familiar environment to the new user, making it easy to find features on the menus and thereby significantly reducing the GIS learning curve.
